Miller Performing Arts: #BeTheChange: Kasama
“Bridge our gap, communicate with love. Despite our differences, we can unite.” A dedication to Hong Kong’s domestic workers – our community’s companions and carers.
The dance and spoken word film Kasama (Tagalog for “together”) is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, capturing the determination and hope of immigrants who leave their homes in search of work to support their families.
Written by migrant domestic worker Maria Nemy Lou Rocio, the co-founder of The Migrant Writers of Hong Kong, Kasama is a call for empathy and understanding in a community that can often feel fragmented and divisive. Inspired by her creative work, professional choreographer Kelsey Ang worked with a group of Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation dancers to bring the spoken word performance to life.
The Migrant Writers of Hong Kong was established in March 2021 as an inclusive and nurturing environment for writers in the migrant community. The group use their platform and programmes to promote mental health awareness through creative writing. Their first anthology Ingat (Take Care) is set to launch in autumn 2023.
