Congratulations to everyone who was invovled in our flagship musical Blood Brothers! Woohoo!! Our musical would not have been a success without the hard work of our choreographers. To let others learn more about developing choreography for a musical, two of our Blood Brothers choreographers Giselle Liu & Kirsten Ho led a musical dance workshop earlier this year. We speak to Gin Gin Mak (13 years old, Renaissance College) about her experience at this workshop.

How did you hear about this workshop, and why did you decide to sign up to it?
I learnt about this event through the YAF website and Facebook page. Seeing that I can work with two amazing choreographers, I was immediately drawn to this and had the need to sign up!

I loved…
Using small props to devise games and then incorporate them into the dance routine was definitely the part I loved the most! Creating these games allowed my creativity and imagination to flow freely, this isn't something I can do everyday. It was such a interesting way to create dance work and it is certainly something new for me.

I learned…
Learning about the enthusiasm and commitment each dancer must have in a production really inspired me to be a better performer in the future. This workshop has also enlightened me on what choreographers look for in auditions, this will be a key tip for me in auditions!

The biggest challenge was…
The biggest challenge must be dancing without a foundation of basic techniques. It does make some moves harder for me to accomplish, but I believe enthusiasm is the most important thing in dance! :)

Tips I would give to other fellow musical dancers…
Give it your best whenever you dance and don't forget to shine that beautiful smile!!

Insight I received in terms of how choreographers create work for a show…
I realised how the piece is usually created by the choreographer's perspective on the scene and story. Taking inspiration from the monologues and song lyrics is also an important point.

Do you want to join a YAF musical?
Definitely yes!! I really admire the professional opportunities that YAF provides for us youngsters and it would be a total dream come true if I was part of one of their musicals!
