Music instructor with Jockey Club “Project Silver” – Intergenerational Arts Project “Every Note Counts”
When did you find yourself falling in love with music?
I started to realise that I loved singing at about 5 years old. I always sang along to whatever songs my dad played on the CD player, even though I didn’t know the lyrics. I just enjoyed listening and being able to “jam” with it. And that hasn’t changed a bit up until today.
What musical skills do you have?
I am a music producer who also writes, arranges and sings songs. I grew up learning piano and flute, and also picked up the guitar by myself at college.
What surprised you most about the training sessions with the music volunteers from Every Note Counts last year?
I think it was their dedication and selflessness. Most of them had a full-time job or were full-time students. They came into coaching sessions after a long day but were still so determined and passionate about preparing a good performance for the elderly. That was very impressive!
What qualities do you think the Every Note Counts music volunteers should have?
A good, caring heart is all that matters. I think the whole purpose of visiting elderly centres is to spread love and care. Any kind of musical experience is welcomed, as long as you have a sincere heart.
What was your most unforgettable performance experience?
I sang in a gospel choir when I was at college in the US. There was one performance when I got picked as a solo singer. I was honoured to sing, improvise and interact with the entire choir and my professor. The performance went well and we got a full standing ovation. That felt absolutely incredible. It still gives me chills to think about it.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I would like my voice to be a form of medication that could cure people who were physically sick.
Do you have any advice for young people who are passionate about music?
Just go for it. Really, it’s that simple. It’s not going to be easy but it’s worth it if you enjoy and learn from every step along the path to your dream.
Which singer or musician would you like to collaborate with?
Tori Kelly! She’s my all-time favourite singer-songwriter. I love that she’s always so genuine and real, and you can totally tell that from her songs. The messages in her songs are so powerful. Plus she’s an amazing singer. It would be an honour to work with and learn from her.
If you had to pick one song to describe your life, what would it be?
Masterpiece by Tori Kelly. We are all masterpieces from the hand of God. There are always ups and downs in life, always things that we’re dissatisfied with, but at the end of the day, we’re in good hands and we are precious. We just need to trust and keep going!
