Chemain Lo
Artist with artist-in-residence programmes for Standard Chartered Arts in the Park 2023

How did you become an artist?

I believe everyone is born an artist. We simply use our own methods to express our ideas. It’s up to us to use our minds and art to find the creativity hidden within ourselves.

When did you first participate in Standard Chartered Arts in the Park?

I first joined Standard Chartered Arts in the Park in 2021. I was one of the face-painting artists providing Peter Pan-themed makeup for participants of all ages.

What interests you most about Standard Chartered Arts in the Park?

Standard Chartered Arts in the Park is Hong Kong’s largest annual youth arts festival. What interests me the most is the specialised theme for each year. The festival also provides educational art lessons that aid young people in developing technical art skills typically not covered in the standard school curriculum. I am often inspired by their work.

What was the process for designing and creating your carnival costumes?

This year we are creating lionfish costumes inspired by the Mexican folk art-styled fantastical creatures known as Alebrijes. After researching the natural features of the fish, we developed a concept design for the costumes. Keeping the art lessons in mind, we utilised methods and materials that are most suitable for students. By creating these costumes, the students were able to acquire new skills and learn how to use new tools. We also encouraged them to design unique fish patterns that express their individuality.

What pleased you most about working with the students of TWGHs Chow Yin Sum Primary School on the lionfish costumes?

Experiencing the harmony between the students and their teacher. The students were able to adopt new skills very quickly and were willing to help each other as a team. Their teacher also played music and provided information about Mexican culture, which helped inspire the students a lot.

What’s special about the lionfish costumes?

During the parade, the students will be wearing their own handmade costumes. With long fins extending from their backs, they can mimic the movements of the lionfish. Each fish costume has a unique design as the colours and patterns are all designed by the students themselves.

If you could transform into an animal, what would it be?

Transforming into a bird would offer an extraordinary experience. It would give me the ability to perceive the world from diverse angles, soaring above the oceans and gaining a new perspective from great heights.

What advice would you give to young people who are passionate about visual arts?

Never limit your imagination, allow it to wander and discover new inspirations. Learn from others and teach others what you have learned.
