Winky Wong
Artist with the Voices Unleashed music programme
What sparked your passion for music?
I discovered my love for singing in primary school, when I joined the school choir. Since then, I’ve taken part in different types of music activities.
What musical skills do you have?
Singing, a cappella, piano, pipa, conducting, songwriting and arranging.
This is your third year with Voices Unleashed. What has surprised you most about being part of this project?
What surprised me most is how much I’ve learned leading the choir. The Voices Unleashed choir brings together people of all ages and abilities, each with a different level of musical experience. It’s been a great opportunity for me to develop my communication skills, to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, understands my message. I’m so grateful that this programme has connected me with such a diverse group.
What has been your most memorable moment with this mixed-ability choir?
Our performance last December was memorable. The songs we performed were created by our young composers and inspired by the life stories they've heard during the programme. One song even described the stories of two choir members. As the conductor, I found it really moving hearing them pour their hearts into the performance.
What would you say to your 70-year-old self?
I hope I’m still working in music and finding joy in this career every day.
What words of wisdom do you have for young music enthusiasts?
If you’re passionate about something, go all in! Time waits for no one, so chase your dreams while you have the energy.
Who is the artist that inspires you most?
I really admire Hong Kong artist Eason Chan. He has an excellent voice, and each of his live performances is a storytelling experience. Singing with such deep emotion requires exceptional technique, and a connection to the lyrics, and the music.
