The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: stART Up Community Arts Project Exhibition 2023
08-25/03/2023
Hong Kong is home to people from many different cultures. According to the 2021 census, 8.4% of the population, over 600,000 people, are from non-Chinese backgrounds. How much do you know about the unique histories and characters of these diverse communities that make up Hong Kong?
The theme of this year’s The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: stART Up Community Arts Project – organised by Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation and funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and now in it’s third year – is cultural symbolism. Between September 2022 and March 2023, thirteen artists and over 500 young people worked together to explore the similarities and differences in language, art and symbols across cultures through a series of visual arts and performing arts workshops.
The resulting artworks are on display from 8 to 25 March at our free exhibition at Y Platform, Youth Square, Chai Wan. The exhibition includes six displays: Every Idiom Tells A Story, carved images inspired by idiomatic expressions around the world; Totem and Tales, creative contemporary totem poles; Diagram of Universal Values, colourful flags decorated with images representing important values; Language Kaleidoscope, a collective work of decorative typography relief artworks; Portraitsss, fun and lively ceramic portraits; and Voice/Noise, an immersive multimedia installation integrating sounds collected from our bustling city.
Culture is important to our everyday lives and plays an integral part in shaping our identity. Join us and explore the diversity of our city’s cultural landscape!
