When L Frank Baum published the classic children’s novel The Wizard of Oz in 1900, he probably didn’t imagine that it would be adapted into a hugely popular technicolour film in 1939, and that the characters and their adventures would continue to resonate with audiences more than a hundred years later!

The Wizard of Oz tells the story of Dorothy and Toto and the adventures she has in the magical Land of Oz after she is swept away by a tornado. As Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road to try and find their way back home, they meet a Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man without a heart and a Cowardly Lion. Together, they embark on an exciting journey to the Emerald City to meet the great Wizard of Oz who they believe will grant them their wishes, helping Dorothy find her way home, the Scarecrow find wisdom, the Tin Man a kind heart and the Lion courage. Along the way, Dorothy and her companions overcome a number of obstacles and ultimately defeat the Wicked Witch of the West.

Full of fantastical creatures and faraway kingdoms, Baum’s book also presents life lessons about growing up and self-respect, reminding readers that kindness, wisdom, courage and faith are qualities that come from within each us.

‘No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home.’ – Dorothy

‘The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid.’ – Wizard of Oz

‘I shall take the heart. For brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world.’ – Tin man

‘You people with hearts…have something to guide you, and need never do wrong; but I have no heart, and so I must be very careful.’ – Tin man

‘Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get.’ – Wizard of Oz

‘If anyone treads on my toes or sticks a pin into me, it doesn’t matter, for I can’t feel it. But I do not want people to call me a fool.’ – Scarecrow
