Onnie Chan - Facilitator of Little Big Voice “Level Up Super Show”

What is your theme and what inspired the theme of your piece?
The theme is about teenagers addicted to the virtual world, was inspired by habit of teenagers which they always need to have their phone in their hands.

What were the biggest challenges of creating your piece?
Creation requires a lot of passion. However, when the creation gets very personal, we may choose to avoid it.
My biggest challenge would be asking the teenagers to face their incorrect living habit. During all the contact hours, I used a lot of theatre games and theatre exercises to shift them to a third person point of view. Guiding them to expose their addition to the virtual world unconsciously. Also leading them to find out the adverse consequences. I am pleased that drama bonds us closer together and I can use drama to put their thoughts into creations.

Between “literally” and “conceptually”, which is closer to your approach in presenting your theme?
It is actually both "literally" and "conceptually". The setting was a reality game show. Audience watching the play are actually the audience of the game show. Therefore, the setting of the play is literal. When it goes down the road, the performance style will become conceptual as it is all about the virtual world.

Would you think online addiction is the problem among teenagers that deserve the most attention?
Yes, I think so. It is because the virtual world is like an endless dark hole. It is full of unknown. If we use it wisely, it can give us knowledge. But once we are addicted to the virtual world, we are very likely to access some bad information. It may also bring damage to our body such as giving us headache, eye diseases, losts sleep etc.

Aside from talking about online addiction, what else would you like the audience to take away from your piece?
I also hope to introduce the Immersive Theatre, the new and popular form of theater in Europe. Although this performance is a very short piece, I still insist to create it together with the students and add elements of Immersive Theatre. Aiming to give the audience a unique and unforgettable experience.
