Ocean Art Walk 2016 at Stanley Plaza

In 2015, world leaders committed to adopting new global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to protect the environment, protect human rights and promote development. Goal 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources – highlights the importance of caring for the world's oceans and combatting the problems of marine pollution and overfishing.

In 2016, YAF, Ocean Recovery Alliance and Link will collaborate to present Ocean Art Walk 2016 at Stanley Plaza. Working with 500 young people and artists, we will create hundreds of plastic fish sculptures, installations and stage performances under the theme, "Plastic Waste vs Fish", to further encourage recycling and avoid using single-use and disposable plastics.

Every year, 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste is discarded into the world's oceans. According to the Zoological Society of London, "In the next ten years, the amount of plastic waste in our oceans could rise to as much as one kilogram of waste for every three kilograms of fish." These levels of marine pollution are unsustainable. All of us contribute to this problem of waste in different ways. Everything we do, each small decision we make, has an impact on the planet and the oceans. We can all choose to make the right decisions – let's act wisely!

"Don't you realise that by taking so many fish, you're stealing from our ocean?"

Why should we cherish our oceans and the creatures that live in them? Embark on an oceanic journey in an original theatre creation that draws inspiration from an ancient Maori legend, and from the fishing community in Aberdeen, Hong Kong. A cast of young YAF talents perform a moving story featuring physical theatre, sound and dance. Written and directed by Lindsey McAlister, with original music composed by Violaine Corradi and Rose Winebrenner (both Cirque du Soleil), and choreography by Kirsten Ho (DANCE Kho), Desiree Ho and Wai Lai.
